King Charles III Named King of New Zealand, Australia

King Charles III has been officially named monarch in Australia and New Zealand.

The move is in tandem with ceremonies marking the ascension of the throne as King of England.

During a a ceremony in Canberra, Governor-General David Hurley proclaimed “Prince Charles Philip Arthur George to be King Charles III, by grace of God, King of Australia”.

In Wellington, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern praised King Charles, saying he “has long had an affection for Aotearoa New Zealand, has consistently demonstrated his deep care for our nation”.

The two ceremonies were relative formalities for former British colonies, who have been independent for decades but retain the monarch as their head of state.

Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, is set to leave for London this week to attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.

Albanese had earlier announced September 22 a public holiday in Australia to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
