In a remarkable turn of events, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sports, Kirsty Coventry has been elected as the first female and African president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The 41-year-old former swimmer from Zimbabwe achieved an outright majority in the first round of voting, outpacing six other candidates, including the expected frontrunner, Lord Sebastian Coe.

Coventry is set to begin her eight-year term on June 23, 2025, taking over from Thomas Bach.

A Celebrated Olympian at the Helm of the IOC

Coventry’s impressive swimming career has paved the way for her leadership position.

She stands as Zimbabwe’s most decorated Olympian, having clinched seven of the country’s eight Olympic medals.

Her accolades include gold medals in the 200-meter backstroke at both the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games.

Beyond her athletic achievements, Coventry has made significant contributions to sports administration, serving on the IOC executive board and chairing the Athletes’ Commission, where she has been a strong advocate for athlete welfare and development.

Coventry’s Aspirations for the Future of the Olympics

After her election, Coventry shared her heartfelt gratitude and laid out her vision for the Olympic movement.

Outgoing IOC President Thomas Bach offered his congratulations, recognizing the importance of her groundbreaking appointment.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also shared his well-wishes, expressing his belief that her athletic background and commitment to upholding the noble ideals of the Olympics will pave the way for her success in this prestigious role.
