The Nigerian judiciary has appointed Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria.
Kekere-Ekun’s appointment follows the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, paving the way for herto assume the esteemed position.
Interestedly, she becomes the second female Chief Justice in Nigeria’s judicial history, succeeding Justice Mariam Aloma Mukhtar, who served from 2012 to 2014.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, born on May 7, 1958, has had a distinguished career, rising through the ranks to become the second most senior justice of the Supreme Court.

Her academic credentials include an LL.B from the University of Lagos in 1980 and an LL.M from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1983.

Called to the Nigerian Bar in July 1981, she began her career in private practice before transitioning to the public sector.
Her judicial journey commenced in 1989 when she was appointed as a Senior Magistrate in Lagos State.
Subsequently, she was elevated to the High Court in 1996, where she also chaired the Robbery and Firearms Tribunal in Lagos.
In 2004, she was appointed to the Court of Appeal, serving in various divisions, including as the presiding justice.
Throughout her career, Kekere-Ekun has demonstrated exceptional dedication, integrity, and expertise, earning her the respect and admiration of her peers.
