The Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum and Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has expressed deep sorrow over the deadly attacks in Kwara State that claimed the lives of at least 162 residents in the villages of Woro and Nuku.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta on Saturday, Abiodun described the incident as a tragic and senseless act of terror, noting that innocent and law-abiding citizens were killed while carrying out their daily activities.
He condemned reports that the attackers targeted residents who allegedly refused to adopt Sharia law, adding that homes and shops were set ablaze and several people were kidnapped during the assault. The attackers are believed to be Boko Haram affiliates.
Abiodun stressed that Nigeria remains a secular state where freedom of religion must be respected, warning that no group has the right to impose beliefs through violence.
“This is a most horrendous and senseless act that must be nipped in the bud,” the governor said.
He urged security agencies to intensify their operations, track down the perpetrators, and ensure they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, insisting that Nigerians deserve to live without fear.
“They must never get away with this. They must be hunted down and dealt with severely,” Abiodun added.
The Ogun State governor also commiserated with Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq, the families of the victims, and the people of the state, expressing hope that justice would be served.
Abiodun said the Southern Governors’ Forum stands in solidarity with Kwara State and called on security agencies to do everything possible to prevent further attacks and bring an end to the killing of innocent citizens
