France captain Kylian Mbappe has offered insight into why Portugal star Joao Felix missed his penalty during their quarter-final shootout at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg on Friday. Les Bleus advanced to the semi-finals after a goalless 120 minutes followed by a penalty shootout.
Mbappe attributed Felix’s miss to the intimidating presence of France’s goalkeeper, describing him as “scary” for the player.
“He’s intimidating. I can’t say exactly, but when Joao Felix hit the post, it was because he thought there was a goalkeeper in front of him who would save it. We were successful, and a large part of that was thanks to Mike,” Mbappe explained.
Next, France will face Spain in the tournament’s semi-final on Tuesday.
