  • The Julius Abure-led Labour Party faction issues a 48-hour ultimatum to Peter Obi to quit the party.

  • Obi was unveiled as part of the new ADC-led opposition coalition against Tinubu in 2027.

  • LP warns members against “dual political loyalties” and vows to resist defection plots.

The Labour Party (LP) has ordered its 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, to resign from the party within 48 hours following his involvement in the newly formed opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, the LP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Obiora Ifoh, accused Obi of holding “dual political loyalties” after his participation in the ADC-led platform designed to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

“We are aware of nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party,” Mr Ifoh alleged.

He continued: “Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition and therefore, any of our members who is part of it is given 48 hours to formally resign his membership.”

The party’s warning follows the unveiling of the ADC coalition leadership on Wednesday, where Obi joined other prominent political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Mr Nasir El-Rufai, and former Senate President David Mark.

Mr Ifoh dismissed the coalition as “a gathering of power mongers” and warned LP members not to be deceived by Obi’s “new Nigeria” mantra.

He urged party loyalists to remain committed to the Abure-led leadership, which he described as the only platform capable of driving youth-oriented reforms.

Peter Obi, who served as LP’s flagbearer in the 2023 presidential election, has yet to officially respond to the ultimatum.
