Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, has backed the newly established 29-man caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman, amidst ongoing turmoil within the Labour Party.

This endorsement was made during a four-day free medical outreach Kingibe organized for her constituents in Abuja, in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons.

Kingibe’s support for the committee, which was formed under the direction of Labour Party’s national leader Peter Obi and Abia Governor Alex Otti, is a direct challenge to the current National Chairman, Julius Abure. She argued that Abure’s tenure ended in June 2023, a position reinforced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“There is no crisis in Labour. It is Abure’s NWC that refused to admit that their tenure has ended,” Kingibe stated. She highlighted that both Alex Otti and Peter Obi had previously extended Abure’s tenure by one year to recover from the 2023 presidential election losses, making the current extension period expire on June 8, 2024.

Kingibe expressed full support for the Nenadi Usman-led committee, stating, “I am in sync with the Nenadi Usman-led committee and back it 100 percent. That is the way to go. Every other thing the Abure-NWC is illegal.”

The disagreement has intensified as Abure and his team notably absent themselves from a recent enlarged stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, convened by Governor Otti to address the party’s leadership issues.

In her community outreach, Kingibe emphasized the success of the initiative, which aimed to provide essential medical services to 5,000 constituents.
