Lagos Police Inspector Faces Sack Over Alleged N915,000 Rice Fraud

A female police inspector from the Lagos State Command is in serious trouble after allegedly duping a resident out of N915,000 in a rice supply deal gone wrong, casting fresh doubts on the integrity of Nigeria’s police force.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was arrested after a complaint was filed at the Ikeja command headquarters on September 11, 2025. Sources say the saga began in January 2024 when the complainant paid the inspector to deliver 20 bags of rice. After receiving the money for the delivery, the officer reportedly disappeared, only to be tracked down to her residence in Olusosun, Ojota, where she was caught.

An insider spoke anonymously that the complaint came in around 2:34 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 in which she owned up to the accusations during questioning and is now in custody pending further action. The case has been forwarded to the Provost’s office at the command headquarters, where the officer faces severe consequences, possibly including dismissal or a reduction in rank.

Police officials have called the incident a “disgrace to the force,” stressing that it violates rules prohibiting officers from moonlighting in private ventures. “This kind of thing makes people lose faith in us,” a senior officer remarked. Efforts to get a statement from the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or messages.

This isn’t the first time Lagos police have faced such allegations. In March 2025, three officers were caught extorting N150,000 from drivers along Ikeja-Berger Road, a scandal that blew up on social media after a victim, Ramadan Adenola, posted about it on X. These incidents point to a troubling trend of police officers abusing their positions, especially at a time when Nigerians are struggling with economic hardship.

The rice scam ties directly to Nigeria’s hiking food prices. With a 50kg bag of rice now costing over N70,000 in many markets, people are desperate for offers to get it at low budgets. The complainant’s loss of N915,000 enough to buy dozens of bags shows how vulnerable citizens are to fraud, especially when it involves someone in uniform.

As the investigation continues, Nigerians are hopeful that it will lead to real accountability and spark reforms to rebuild trust in the force.
