Endorsement comes amid Atiku’s exit and rising defections from the party
Former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has endorsed former President Dr Goodluck Jonathan as the Peoples Democratic Party’s strongest option for the 2027 presidential election, urging the party to actively woo him back.
“I think for PDP now they should try to woo him [Jonathan]; he is their best bet. To me, he is their best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him,” Lamido said on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
The PDP chieftain described Jonathan as an experienced leader who understands governance and works well with others, stressing that no current southern member of the party could match his pedigree.

He noted that the former president was “most welcome, competent, and very qualified,” and that he remained the only figure in the party with the capacity to unite its ranks ahead of the 2027 race.
Lamido’s endorsement follows growing speculation over Jonathan’s possible return to the PDP, with quiet lobbying by influential members fuelling talk of a comeback.
Jonathan, who has kept a low political profile since his 2015 electoral defeat, has yet to declare his intentions.
