Tijani Onwenu, son of the late Nigerian music icon Onyeka Onwenu, has paid tribute to his mother on the first anniversary of her passing.
In a short but heartfelt message shared on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Tijani wrote:
“A year ago, today.
RIP mom
July 30, 2024.”

It will be recalled that Onyeka Onwenu, fondly known as the “Elegant Stallion,” tragically passed away after collapsing shortly following a performance at the 80th birthday celebration of Mrs. Stella Okoli, founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
She was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she was later confirmed dead.
Following her passing, her children released a statement saying:
“She was rushed to the hospital after an amazing last performance, where doctors made every effort to save her life… sadly, she passed.”
They described their mother as an “icon and legend” whose contributions to music, film, and humanitarian work touched countless lives.
“She is greatly loved and missed,” they added.
Onwenu’s legacy lives on through her acclaimed albums such as In The Morning Light and Dancing In The Sun, and her memorable roles in films like Half of a Yellow Sun and Lionheart. Her voice, artistry, and activism continue to resonate with generations of fans across Nigeria and beyond.
