Commander of the 81 Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island, Lagos, Brigadier General Ahmed Taiwo, has explained that the Phase Four of the military internal security operation deployed in the Lagos Lekki Toll Gate incident on October 20, involved the use of both blank and live bullets.

General Taiwo said that a portion of troops deployed to the Toll Gate on the incident night were armed with live bullets, but however maintained that only soldiers with blank bullets fired shots into the air.

This was clarified by the General on Saturday, November 21, during the resumed proceedings of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing the alleged shootings and killings of #EndSARS protesters by Men of the Nigerian Army at the Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos, on October 20.

General Taiwo who came for cross-examination by two counsels for #EndSARS protesters, Mr Adesina Ogunlana and Messrs Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), had appeared before the same panel on November 14, in defence of the Nigerian Army.

When asked by Olumide-Fusika if soldiers who went to the Toll Gate carried guns, General Taiwo said;

“When you are talking of guns, you are talking about high-calibre guns. They were carrying rifles; not guns.”
