Li Tie, the former Premier League star and ex-China national team coach, has lost his appeal against a 20-year prison sentence for bribery.

The Hubei Provincial Higher People’s Court rejected Li’s appeal, confirming the original sentence handed down in December.

Li’s involvement in corruption has made headlines as part of a wider investigation into bribery and match-fixing within Chinese football.

Li Tie’s Football Career and Fall From Grace

Li Tie, who represented China in nearly 100 international matches, had a successful football career, playing for clubs like Everton before retiring.

His post-playing career saw him take on the role of China’s national team coach from January 2020 to December 2021.

Despite his success on the field, his involvement in bribery charges has tarnished his legacy, highlighting the deep-rooted corruption that has affected Chinese football for years.

Xi Jinping’s Anti-Corruption Campaign in Sports

Li Tie’s bribery sentence comes amid a wider effort by President Xi Jinping to root out corruption across various sectors, including sports.

The government’s anti-graft campaign has been especially focused on the football industry since 2022, leading to the conviction of numerous football figures, including players, coaches, and administrators.

This crackdown on sports corruption is not just limited to football but spans across other sectors as well, as the government aims to clean up the system and restore credibility to Chinese sports.
