The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91, marking the end of a remarkable era in Nigeria’s traditional leadership.

Oba Adetona’s death on Sunday, July 13, 2025, came only hours after the nation mourned the passing of his longtime friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The revered monarch’s legacy transcends Ijebuland, leaving indelible imprints on governance, culture, and community development.

Here are 10 pivotal things to know about the late monarch:

1. Born in Ijebu-Ode – 1934

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was born on May 10, 1934, in Imupa, Ijebu-Ode, into the prestigious Anikinaiya Royal House—one of Ijebuland’s four ruling houses.

2. Educated at Home and Abroad

He attended Baptist and Ansar-Ud-Deen schools in Ijebu-Ode, proceeded to Olu-Iwa (now Adeola Odutola) College, and later studied Accountancy in the United Kingdom—showcasing his quest for knowledge even as a young prince.

3. Crowned Awujale at 26

On April 2, 1960, at just 26 years old, Adetona ascended the throne, succeeding Oba Daniel Robertson Adesanya Gbelegbuwa II. His enthronement heralded a reign of modernisation deeply rooted in tradition.

4. Longest-Reigning Monarch in Nigeria

Reigning for 65 years, Oba Adetona became one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers, guiding Ijebuland through decades of cultural evolution and political change.

5. Champion of Community Development

The monarch revitalised the Regberegbe (age-grade system), turning it into a force for social development, youth engagement, and grassroots unity.

6. Architect of Ojude Oba’s Global Fame

Under his leadership, the annual Ojude Oba Festival grew into an internationally recognised cultural event, drawing tourists and celebrating Ijebu heritage.

7. Legacy in Education and Governance

Oba Adetona endowed the Professorial Chair in Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University and inspired the creation of the Oba Sikiru Adetona Institute for Governance Studies, advancing scholarship in leadership and public policy.

8. Bold and Outspoken Royal Voice

Known for his courage and candour, Oba Adetona was sought after by Nigeria’s political leaders for advice on national issues, never shying away from expressing views on governance and justice.

9. Family and Personal Life

The monarch was married to Iyabọ Oke, Modupe Ẹkundayọ, and Oluwakẹmi Dodo-Williams, and is survived by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
