Makinde Sets January Date for N80,000 Minimum Wage Payment to Workers | Daily Report Nigeria

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that his administration will commence the payment of the newly approved N80,000 minimum wage to workers starting from January 2024.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s office on Monday, Makinde emphasized his commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants in the state.

The new wage structure, which he described as a milestone achievement, will impact all public sector employees across the state.

Makinde, who has consistently advocated for better working conditions, noted that the payment would reflect the ongoing efforts of his government to prioritize the welfare of workers, despite the economic challenges facing the nation.

The Governor also assured that the full implementation of the new wage would be carried out seamlessly, without any delays.

“The decision to implement this wage increase is borne out of our unflinching dedication to the well-being of our workers. As a government, we recognize the vital role our civil servants play in the development of Oyo State. We will not relent in our efforts to improve their lives,” Makinde said.

The Governor further disclosed that the implementation would begin with the January 2024 salary cycle, and that the necessary arrangements were already in place to ensure smooth disbursement of the new wage.

“This is a new dawn for workers in Oyo State. We are committed to ensuring that the N80,000 minimum wage becomes a reality for all eligible employees, effective from next month,” he added.

The announcement has been met with widespread commendation from labor unions, with many hailing the Governor’s bold move.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Oyo State have expressed their support, describing the development as a much-needed relief for workers grappling with rising inflation and economic hardships.

“We are pleased with this gesture, and we appreciate the Governor for keeping his promise to prioritize workers’ welfare,” said Comrade Waheed Olojede, the NLC Chairman in Oyo State.
