Man Bags 12 years For Sexual Assault in Abuja

A High Court in Maitama, Abuja has sentenced one Kabiru Oriyomi to 12 years imprisonment over assaulting a teenager.

The victim was said to have raped a 17-year-old girl who lived with his (convict’s) family.

Kabiru was said to be a resident of Mai-Angwa, Zone 7, Dutse Alhaji, Abuja.

News Agency of Nigeria disclosed that the judgement had followed a series of adjournments since the case was instituted on the 15th of May, 2018.

The 43-year-old convict was prosecuted by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

Justice Yusuf Halilu, judiciously exercised discretion amid delivering of judgement upon the arguments of both the prosecuting counsel and the defence.

Justice’s statement reads:“The world is changing, but unfortunately sexual assault has continued to happen every day. ”

“Victims of rape, sexual assault and other related offences are left to wonder why their worth and privacy will be violated and taken away.”

He added “The past is written on the body of the rape victims; they carry it every single day.”

“The past sometimes feels like it might kill them, but indeed, it is a burden that is very heavy. ”

Found guilty, the court thereby sentenced Kabiru to 12 years imprisonment with no fine.
