A shocking incident occurred in Umuahia, Abia State, on Sunday, as a man, Lawrence Uzor, allegedly gouged out his wife’s eyes with a knife while she was asleep. The victim, Amarachi Lawrence, a 38-year-old teacher, is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.

The couple’s landlady, Madam Lovejane Nwaiwu, who was also attacked by Lawrence, recounted the horrific incident. “I heard the man shouting ‘Odogwu, Odogwu’ around 10 pm on Saturday. I was worried and started praying for them. Later, I heard the wife screaming, ‘Mummy, I have been killed’. I rushed to their room and saw the man holding a knife. He tried to attack me, but I defended myself, and he cut my hand and mouth.”

The First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, visited the victims at the hospital and expressed her sadness over the incident. “This is a terrible case of violence, attempted murder. I will take immediate action to ensure the victim is well and protected.”

The Medical Director of FMC, Umuahia, Prof. Azubuike Onyebuchi, represented by his Director, Medical Services, Mrs. Aisha Onyemaobi, said the victim was deeply asleep when the husband attacked her. “We expect a good progress in her recovery,” he said.

The Umueze Ibeku community chairman, Tutus Jonah, lamented the incident, saying it was like a film. “The victim and her husband had been living well until a young man took him to a prayer house, and he came back with colanuts, eggs, and other items.”

The victim’s sister and cousin appealed to the Inspector General of Police and the government to intervene in the matter and help their sister recover.
