EFL Cup: Man Utd Won't Appeal After Grimsby Fielded Ineligible Player

After reviewing Grimsby’s quick cooperation and the paperwork mistake, the EFL fined the club £20,000, with £10,000 suspended until the end of the 2025–26 season.

Grimsby fielded an ineligible player because the registration went through at 12:01pm, a single minute past the deadline.

Despite the breach, Man Utd decided not to press the issue, so Grimsby keep their place in the competition.

The case shows how tiny admin slips can lead to big problems.

Clubs should double-check paperwork before deadlines, especially in big cup ties where officials and rivals will scrutinise every detail.
