Many Killed, Some Injured as Herdsmen Invade Taraba Community

taraba

At least 26 people, including children and women, are said to have been killed and many more injured when suspected armed herders attacked the Tor-Damisa community in Taraba State’s Donga Local Government Area.

Residents said the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, destroyed hundreds of houses and property worth millions of naira.

According to our correspondent, the attack was a retaliation for a Fulani man in the area being shot in the leg by a suspected Tiv farmer, who is currently being treated in police custody.

Zaki Ugondo Uma, the village head of the community, told journalists over the phone that more bodies were still being recovered.

Ugondo explained that there was a minor misunderstanding in the community between Fulani herders and some Tiv farmers, and that he worked feverishly with Fulani leaders to restore normalcy.

“Some farmers had an issue with Fulani herders,” he explained, “but we reached a truce and they assured us of peace.”

I am taken aback because we awoke this morning to a massive attack on our community that affected over 15 villages.

“As I speak, we have yet to recover all bodies, but we have recovered more than 26 corpses.” We’re in a state of despair because we don’t know how long the attack will last. ” I am urging the government to provide security as well as intervene with relied-upon materials.

ASP Usman Abubakar, the Police Public Relations Officer for Taraba State Command, told journalists that the Command was aware of the incident but had yet to determine the cause of the crisis and the number of casualties.
