In commemoration of the 2024 International Mental Health Day, a coalition of nurses led by Nurse Clementina Akpule spearheaded a mental health awareness walk themed “Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.”

The event aimed at raising awareness about the importance of mental health and its prioritization, particularly in professional settings, held on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

The walk commenced from the popular Ekpan Roundabout in Uvwie local government area and extended to various neighboring areas as the group of nurses and mental health advocates marched through the streets, distributing informative leaflets and engaging the public in discussions about the significance of mental well-being.

Participants shared leaflets with messages emphasizing the need for healthy work environments and the reduction of workplace stressors, which can have detrimental effects on employees’ mental health.

Mrs. Clementina Akpule, the lead organizer, highlighted the need for more inclusive policies that support employees facing mental health challenges.

“It is crucial that employers begin to recognize the impact of mental health on productivity and overall well-being. We need to create environments that are not only physically safe but also mentally supportive,” she stated.

The event saw participation from health professionals, local business representatives, and community members, all advocating for the improvement of mental health services and resources in the workplace.

Several speakers also emphasized the role of employers in fostering an open and supportive culture where employees can freely discuss their mental health concerns without fear of stigma or discrimination.

The coalition has Nurse Carina Algood as Assistant General Coordinator and Nurse Mavis Michael Ayoromiegha as Assistant Coordinator, who all worked in partnership with humanitarian and rehabilitator, Mr Seisingha Pondi.
