Methodist Church Could Break Up Over Same Sex Marriage - Official | Daily Report Nigeria

The United Methodist Church Episcopal Area in Nigeria (UMCN) has threatened to break out from the Church if the global body endorses same-sex marriage during its 2022 General Conference.

Daily Report Nigeria understands the decision is followed by the lingering debate and rift surrounding same sex marriage in the Methodist Church.

The plan was disclosed by an official of the UMCN, Bishop John Wesley Yohanna during a press conference in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital over the weekend.

Yohanna insisted that Nigerian laws are opposed to gay marriage, adding that the issue is one that the Nigerian body would not tolerate.

“If the plan succeeds conference, we will not be part of UMC that will change the language of the Book of Discipline to accommodate same-sex marriage. Our loyalty is with Jesus Christ, Bishop Yohanna stated.

He further disclosed that the debate on whether the Church should accept homosexuality or not didn’t start today, but dates back as far back as 1972 when the controversy began.

Yohanna stated that the majority vote then was against same sex practice. In fact, results of votes cast in 2019 stood against homosexuality as incompatible with Christian teachings.
