Mexican authorities have confirmed the tragic death of 23-year-old social media influencer Valeria Marquez, who was fatally shot during a TikTok livestream at her beauty salon in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara, on Tuesday evening.
Marquez, who had a growing following on TikTok and regularly shared beauty and lifestyle content, was gunned down by a man who reportedly entered her salon under the pretense of delivering a gift, according to local media reports.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Jalisco state prosecutor’s office noted, “The victim is someone with an active presence and influence on social media.” It added, “A man entered the premises and apparently fired a gun at her.”

While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, officials have not yet linked the killing to any criminal organization. Zapopan is located in a region known to be a stronghold of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico’s most violent drug trafficking syndicates. Despite this, Jalisco’s state security coordinator, Roberto Alarcón, said investigators have found no direct evidence connecting Marquez’s murder to cartel activity.
Zapopan mayor Juan José Frangie expressed shock over the killing, stating that Marquez had not previously reported any threats or sought protection from authorities. “It’s incredible that you’re making a video and then you’re murdered. A femicide is the worst thing,” he said.
The incident has added to growing concerns over violence against women in Mexico. According to the United Nations, roughly 10 women or girls are killed each day in the country, highlighting a dire issue of gender-based and criminal violence.
