Nigeria ministers have described their meeting with labour leaders on Wednesday as productive.

The press briefing followed discussions held at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, in Abuja.

Leading the government delegation was the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

Representing the labour side were Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Nuhu Toro, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

While the meeting’s agenda was not disclosed, it is known that the Organised Labour voiced dissatisfaction with recent increases in petrol prices, electricity tariffs, soaring inflation, and the high cost of living.

Last week, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) raised petrol prices at its retail outlets in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

In Lagos, the price per litre rose to N998 from N855, while in Abuja, it increased from N897 to N1,030.

This latest hike follows a previous increase on 2nd September 2024, when NNPCL raised the price from N568 to N855, which had already sparked public outcry.

Prior to that, in June, the price had been increased from N184 to N568 per litre.
