MLK Day 2022: Shedrack Agediga Foundation Embarks on Community Service, Cleans Effurun Market

The 2022 edition of the annual Martin Luther King Jnr Day celebration saw the Shedrack Agediga Foundation take on a thorough cleanup of the Effurun Market in Uvwie LGA of Delta State.

According to Chairman of the Foundation, Shedrack Agediga, the move is inline with the year’s theme “Creating a Beloved Community Begins With Me.’

The exercise witnessed a large turnout of members of the foundation, as well as sister Civil Society Organizations.

On why the foundation chose to take the route of cleaning the Effurun Market, Shedrack Agediga said;

“The Martin Luther King Jnr Day celebration is a cardinal project of SAF, and this year’s theme is community service driven, and that is why we are doing this.

Quizzed if there are efforts to consolidate on the day’s exercise, the Chairman expressed concern on the nonchalant attitude of citizens towards obeying laws, with emphasis on keeping the environment clean.

“On doing what we have done is a normal because people don’t want to obey laws and they will continue to disobey laws until the government takes a bold step towards implementing these laws as well as punishing offenders,” Agediga added.

He pointed out that the foundation is open to collaborate with other bodies, including the government to continue on this path.

On his part, the Chairman Uvwie Local Government Area, Hon Ramson Onoyake expressed gratitude to the Chairman and members of SAF for embarking on the project.

Represented by the Task Force Chairman on Environment, transport and Traffic Control, Uvwie local government area, Isaac Itobi, Onoyake maintained that keeping the city clean is a priority of his administration.

He warned women in the market and tricycle riders to keep required guidelines towards environmental cleaning ness in check or prepare to face the wrath of the law.

The Chairman, Centre For Environmental Peace and Justice, Chief Sheriff Mulade commended the move by SAF, and tasked for CSOs to emulate the foundation by organizing monthly environmental cleaning exercises.

Some of the women at the market also poured encomiums on the Shedrack Agediga Foundation for giving the market an hygienic face lift on their behalf.

They called on the Uvwie Council and other organizations to collaborate towards maintain a clean environment at the market.

The exercise had notable groups like the Ijaw Youth Council, Delta Ijaw Comrade Community and other student bodies present.
