A mother, Esther Obidigwe, and her two children, Ozioma and Obuka Obidigwe, have been arrested by security operatives in Anambra State for beating their 75-year-old father, Romanus Obidigwe, over firewood.

The incident occurred in Awba-Ofemmili community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State. According to the State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, the victim suffered a series of beatings by his family members.

Obidigwe, a retired former civil servant, said his family beat him constantly. “But what caused this particular incident is that my daughter, Ozioma, sold my firewood without my consent and when I tried to find out why she did it, they pounced on me, tied me up and used a rod to injure me,” he said.

He also disclosed that the trio had not fed him since the incident and that they usually stole from him, especially his first son, Obuka, who had gone to the local government to seek compensation.

During interrogations, Obuka denied being present when the incident happened, while Esther confessed to the crime. Ozioma claimed that she was the one her father wanted to kill.

Obinabo warned all members of the society to desist from crime, saying that the present administration seeks to ensure that the oppressed get justice.

She insisted that her ministry is not only for women and children but is created for the social welfare of all.

The trio has been handed over to the police, where they will be questioned and charged in court.
