In a dramatic UEFA Europa League round-of-16 clash, Fenerbahçe crashed out despite a 2-0 win against Rangers in the second leg.

The aggregate score of 3-3 saw Rangers advance on penalties, sparking Jose Mourinho’s fury over controversial refereeing decisions.

Mean while, Rangers eventually defeated Mourinho’s team 3-2 on penalties.

Fenerbahçe’s Fightback Falls Short

Fenerbahçe entered the second leg with a 3-1 deficit from their first encounter at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul.

Determined to turn the tie around, Mourinho’s men put on a dominant display in Scotland.

Goals from Dusan Tadić and Michy Batshuayi secured a 2-0 victory, bringing the aggregate score to 3-3.

However, Fenerbahçe needed a third goal to qualify, as Rangers had the advantage due to their away goals.

Despite relentless pressure, the match went to penalties, where Rangers emerged victorious.

Mourinho Rages at Refereeing and VAR Decisions

The Portuguese tactician didn’t hold back his frustration, suggesting that Fenerbahçe were unfairly denied three penalties.

Mourinho questioned the integrity of UEFA officiating, implying a pattern of unfair treatment:

“I hope everything that’s happened to me in European competitions is not a consequence of the Budapest final, and I hope it’s just random.

Since that final, since my suspension, the things that happened to us—like missing out on the Champions League due to a last-minute penalty only the fourth official saw—make me question things.

Today, we played under one of the best VARs, yet he failed to see one of three clear penalties. I just hope it’s random.”

Mourinho previously clashed with referee Anthony Taylor during the 2023 Europa League final, where Roma lost to Sevilla.

After that match, he famously called Taylor “a disgrace.” Now, he suggests that his past disciplinary issues might still be affecting refereeing decisions in his favor.

Another UEFA Controversy in Mourinho’s Career?

This latest episode adds to Mourinho’s long history of disputes with UEFA and referees.

His career has been filled with moments of heated post-match press conferences, fines, and touchline bans.

While some believe Mourinho is simply defending his team, others feel his complaints highlight real inconsistencies in European officiating.

Would UEFA address Mourinho’s concerns, or is this just another chapter in his ongoing battles? One thing is clear—Mourinho never backs down from a fight.
