The Lagos State Government has partnered MTN Nigeria to redevelop the Obalende under-bridge into a modern transport hub known as Y’ELLO Bus Park.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the plan in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Tuesday.

According to Wahab, the project is designed to transform the previously degraded and unsafe under-bridge space into a functional, secure and community-oriented facility for commuters and residents of the Obalende axis.

He said the bus park would feature a fully organised and regulated transport terminal, a recycling drop-off station, a road camp for Lagos Waste Management Authority sweepers and security agencies, over 60 public toilet facilities, kiosks and other essential amenities.

Wahab explained that safety, health and aesthetics were central to the project’s design, noting that solar-powered lighting would enhance night-time visibility, reduce blind spots and improve the effectiveness of CCTV surveillance to curb criminal activities in the area.

He added that a biodigester system would be deployed to sustainably manage wastewater generated within the park, while a dedicated recycling station would discourage illegal waste disposal.

The commissioner further stated that the initiative aligns with Lagos State’s climate responsibility agenda, with plans to install solar panels to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Tree planting, he said, would also be undertaken to improve air quality and enhance the visual appeal of the environment.

“This project reflects our resolve to reclaim public spaces, make them functional, sustainable and safe, and ensure they serve the needs of Lagosians in a modern and responsible way,” Wahab said.

It was gathered that the initiative follows recent enforcement actions by the state government, which saw the eviction of squatters and the removal of illegal structures beneath the Obalende bridge.
