Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has shed light on the secret behind his dominance on social media, where he holds the title of the most-followed African artist.

In a recent appearance on BET Talks, the With You singer attributed his massive digital following to his authenticity and openness. Davido explained that his fans connect with him because he is not afraid to show his real self—both on and off the stage.

“I’m the most-followed African artist across social media because I’m free with my fans,” he said. “At the beginning of my career, I was very open. I used to do vlogs, showing people my life. A lot of Nigerian and African artists are always scared to show their real selves.”

Unlike some of his peers who prefer to keep a polished and carefully curated public image, Davido said he shares everyday, relatable moments. He recalled his early days in the U.S., where he would casually post videos of himself at home in shorts and slippers, which fans appreciated for its genuineness.

“I used to just post myself at home in shorts and slippers, doing regular stuff. People liked that because it felt real,” he said.

Davido also credited his time in America for shaping his open-minded attitude, contrasting it with the overly cautious approach some African celebrities take when it comes to personal branding.

“When I moved back to Nigeria, some celebrities overthink and overdo it,” he added. “I was like, no, just be chill. Just go with the flow. I feel like that’s how it should be.”

The artist believes that his unfiltered interactions and laid-back personality have played a major role in growing his online presence and maintaining a strong connection with his fans across the globe.
