Human Rights Activist, Omoyele Sowore has labeled Federal Government’s N8,000 palliative initiative as a “renewed shege.”
Sowore’s statement came after the announcement of N8,000 monthly stipends for six months as a palliative measure for 12 million poor households affected by the removal of fuel subsidy.
He said on Twitter:
“The govt of #RenewedShege! So, @officialABAT is going to provide a palliative of N53 per day for 6 months? Jokes carried too far! These guys don’t rate Nigerians!”
Upon assuming office on May 29, Tinubu immediately removed the fuel subsidy, causing the petrol pump price to skyrocket from N195 to N540.

The World Bank projected that Tinubu’s administration would save at least N2 trillion in 2023 and N11 trillion by 2025 through this policy.
It said:
“With the petrol subsidy removal, the government is projected to achieve fiscal savings of approximately 2 trillion naira in 2023, equivalent to 0.9% of GDP. These savings are expected to reach over 11 trillion naira by the end of 2025.”
However, this decision has faced widespread criticism, with Nigerians expressing their dissatisfaction over the meager palliatives offered and the resulting hardships.
Other critics aside from Sowore have also accused the new government of bringing “Renewed Shege” on Nigerians instead of the promised “Renewed Hope.”
