Former Real Madrid defender Nacho Fernandez has shed light on his decision to leave the club after 24 years. He revealed that his departure was a carefully considered choice, not a sudden decision.

Nacho, who joined Real Madrid at the age of 10 and played 364 matches for the club, has been a key player over the years, contributing 16 goals and 10 assists. His achievements include winning six UEFA Champions League titles, four La Liga championships, and five FIFA Club World Cups, among others.

Reflecting on his decision to leave, Nacho Fernandez shared with Relevo (via Madrid Xtra) that it wasn’t a hasty decision.

“It’s not something you wake up and decide suddenly,” he said. “It takes months and many days of reflection. Even though I was fortunate to experience some of the best years at Real Madrid, the life of a footballer, despite how it might seem from the outside, has its tough moments.”

Nacho Fernandez spoke about the relentless demands of playing for Real Madrid, which requires constant high performance and winning.

“I’ve been at the club since I was 10 and left at 34. I’m lucky to have experienced the best of Real Madrid,” he continued. “But the constant pressure to prove yourself, fight for your place, and compete with new signings takes a mental toll. Even though my motivation was always high, it’s a decision that gradually felt right over time. Eventually, you reach a point where you realize it’s time to move on.”
