The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians against the growing circulation of counterfeit Kiss condoms in markets across the country, warning that their use could endanger public health.

In a public notice released on Monday via its official X handle, NAFDAC said the alert, tagged Public Alert No. 042/2025, followed information provided by DKT International Nigeria, the authorised distributor of Kiss condoms and a major player in contraceptive social marketing.

The agency revealed that fake Kiss condoms have been uncovered in several key markets, including Onitsha, Idumota, Trade Fair, and other locations in Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe, Enugu and parts of the country.

NAFDAC explained that authentic Kiss condoms are produced to help prevent unintended pregnancies and protect users from sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, gonorrhoea and syphilis. Counterfeit versions, it said, undermine this protection and expose users to serious health dangers.

To distinguish original products from fake ones, the agency noted that genuine Kiss condom packs carry clear usage instructions, storage and safety information, full manufacturer details and lighter packaging with a visible condom image.

Fake packs, on the other hand, reportedly have darker packaging, missing side information, plain white interiors without images, incomplete manufacturer details and no safety or storage guidance.

NAFDAC also pointed out physical differences, stating that original Kiss condoms are typically larger, oval-shaped, properly lubricated and have wider teat ends, while counterfeit ones tend to be thinner, rounder, poorly lubricated and smaller in size.

The agency warned that using fake condoms could result in breakage, infections, allergic reactions and a misleading sense of safety. Nigerians were advised to buy condoms only from reliable and approved outlets.

NAFDAC added that it has instructed its zonal and state officials to intensify market checks and remove falsified Kiss condoms nationwide, while urging health workers and the public to report any suspected fake medical products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
