NANS Upholds Nationwide Protest over Petrol Hike | Daily Report Nigeria

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has said that it is prepared to mobilize a nationwide protest against the recent increase in petrol prices, unless the government reverses the decision.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that NANS has already scheduled a strike for September 15, 2024.

In an interview with Channels Television, NANS Secretary David Bariereka revealed that the association is engaging with key stakeholders in the petroleum industry, including businessman Aliko Dangote and the Minister of State for Petroleum, to find a solution that alleviates the public’s burden.

However, Bariereka clarified that NANS is not yet mobilizing for protest and urged students to disregard calls for a national protest.

He stressed that the association will exhaust all avenues of negotiation and engagement with relevant authorities before resorting to protests.

NANS Senate President Henry Okuomo revealed the union’s determination to hold the government accountable for the current hardship situation in the country.

Okuomo stated that the union is capable of making its voice loud and will demand not only a reduction in fuel price but also address other issues affecting the nation.

Furthermore, the student body called for the removal of the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.

Bariereka urged Nigerian students to remain calm and await clear directives from the NANS national secretariat regarding the next course of action in response to the fuel price hike.
