Natasha Drags Akpabio to IPU over Sexual Harassment Allegations

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central in the National Assembly, has dragged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) over allegations of sexual harassment and her six-month suspension.

In an emotional speech at the Women in Parliament session at the United Nations in New York, Natasha sought justice and called for the intervention of global democratic institutions.

Natasha emphasized that her suspension from the Senate was unlawful and an act of injustice against her.

She expressed concerns for her safety, claiming that “the powers that be” in Nigeria might attempt to detain her in New York for speaking out on the issue at the global event.

The Nigerian Senate had earlier this month announced Natasha’s suspension following recommendations from its Committee on Ethics, Rules, and Code of Conduct.

This development comes after Natasha resubmitted a sexual harassment petition against Akpabio, which was initially dismissed.

Senate Rules Out Reversal of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Suspension

The Nigerian Senate has ruled out reversing the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central. Senate spokesman, Yemi Adaramodu, stated that the Senate would adhere strictly to its rules and not be swayed by external pressure.

“There is no pressure anywhere that can take our eyes away from our noble statutes. The Senate will always regulate her conduct, as empowered in the Nigerian Constitution and as enshrined in our Standing Orders,” Adaramodu said.
