INEC to proceed with Natasha’s recall petition after confirmation of petitioners’ contact details.
INEC notified Natasha about the development and sets to proceed with the petition request.
In a dramatic U-turn, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has retracted its earlier statement and has issued a confirmation over the validity of contact details of petitioner’s representatives for the recall process of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a statement disclosed today, the 26th of March by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, noted that the telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and other necessary details of representatives of the petitioners has been received by the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
Initially, INEC had had dismissed the petition on Tuesday because there were discrepancies in the contact details of the petitioners. It noted that the petition did not meet the requirements provided in Clause 1 (f) of INEC ‘s Regulations and Guidelines as contact address, telephone number(s) and e-mail address(es) were missing on the cover letter of the entry. Thus, no means of contacting the petitioners.

However, since the petitioner’s representatives have done the needful, the recall process has been accepted by INEC and the process is set to be initiated.
In line with INEC’s Clause 2(a) of the Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024, the Commission has sent a letter to notify Senator Natasha on the receipt of the recall petitioner’s details.
The letter has also been shared with the Presiding officer of the Senate and has been published on INEC’s website for public access.
As INEC is set to resume the recall proceedings, the petitioners will need to prove beyond doubt that their claims hold merit. Meanwhile, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team might need to prepare a robust defense to challenge the petition’s validity.
