The National Mosque in Abuja has appointed a new Imam, an Igbo man.

Daily Report Nigeria gathers that the new Imam, identified as Prof. Ilyas Usman was appointed by the mosque to support the three existing imams in the national mosque.

 

Usman is said to be the first Professor of Arabic in Igboland, and is now charged with the responsibility of helping and supporting the two active Imams, Prof. Ibrahim Makari and Prof. Muhammad Kabir, in the rotational conduct of the Juma’ah and daily congregational prayers.

According to reports from Daily Trust, the fourth Imam, Sheikh Ahmad Onilewura is said to have not been leading prayers for a long time now due to his health conditions.

The three Imams are now charged with the responsibility of the general overview of the 25,000-capacity National Mosque of Nigeria which built in 1984 and officially opened to the public in 1991.
