  • Men of the Nigerian Navy have rescued a group of people, after a boat capsized in Bayelsa.

  • The rescued victims were said to be on their way to Yenagoa when the accident happened.

  • A total of 8 policemen and one civilian were rescued.

Men of the Nigerian Navy in Bayelsa State have rescued some police officers, as well as a civilian following a boat capsize.

According to reports, eight policemen, as well as one civilian were rescued.

The accident occurred near the Agbura community in Bayelsa State while the victims were en route to Yenagoa.

They reportedly hit a submerged wreck, which led to their crash.

Confirming the rescue in a statement released on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, the Director of Naval Information said Naval officers were quickly deployed to the area, where the victims were rescued, including three rifles belonging to the police officers.

The statement read;

On December 24, 2024, Nigerian Navy Personnel deployed around Agbura community Bayelsa State successfully conducted a search and rescue operation and rescued the 9 passengers comprising 8 Police Officers and one Civilian along with 3 rifles belonging to the police officers,”

“The officers were en route to Yenagoa when their speed boat hit a submerged wreck and capsized. Subsequently, first aid was administered to those injured and were subsequently transferred to the Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa for further medical treatment. 

“However, the submerged wreckage that caused the incident was noted and marked to prevent further occurrences.

“The recovered weapons were documented and secured awaiting proper handing and taking over to the Nigerian Police Force Bayelsa State Command. This successful rescue operation underscores the synergy and collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and security agencies.”

HMPV: No Cause for Alarm, Says Minister

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Adekunle Salako, has reassured Nigerians not to panic over the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), emphasizing that it is not a novel virus.

Salako urged the public to prioritize hygiene, especially during the current season linked to the virus.
