The Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed a total of N11 billion in the last six months, benefitting 90,000 students across the country, according to a recent disclosure.

The announcement was made during a visit by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund to NELFUND for an oversight inspection. National Assembly correspondent, Lami Ali, reported that the committee, led by its Chairman, Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita, also visited the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) as part of their evaluation of education-related initiatives.

Senator Kaita praised NELFUND’s efforts, noting that the financial support provided has been critical in helping thousands of Nigerian students pursue higher education.

“This disbursement is a monumental achievement for our education sector, and it demonstrates the federal government’s commitment to improving access to quality education,” he stated.

NELFUND, established to alleviate financial barriers for students seeking tertiary education, has been instrumental in making higher learning more accessible to Nigerians from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

The scheme continues to grow in reach and impact, with expectations of increased funding and expanded student participation in the coming years.

The education sector has long faced challenges with accessibility, and initiatives like NELFUND are seen as vital steps in addressing the gap.

As the committee’s oversight tour highlighted, such initiatives are critical to ensuring that the country’s youth have the resources needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive academic landscape.

In related news, the committee also conducted an evaluation of JAMB’s operations to assess the effectiveness of the current admissions process.

Both NELFUND and JAMB play complementary roles in Nigeria’s education system, with each organization contributing to the accessibility and fairness of higher education opportunities for students nationwide.
