Nigeria has cut off its electricity supply to Niger Republic following a military coup that sacked the country’s elected leader, Mohamed Bazoum.
Niger’s electricity company, Nigelec, confirmed that the country relied on Nigeria for 70 per cent of its electricity, which was generated from the Kainji Dam.
The impact of the power cuts was evident, with residents in cities such as Niamey, Maradi, and Zinder experiencing limited power for only one hour before enduring up to five hours of blackout.
Checks revealed that the supply of power to Niger was cut off on August 1, following a presidential directive.
