The double gold medal production from Nigeria at the inaugural African Flag Football Championship in downtown Cairo put the nation’s name out there.

The weekend-long affair from June 20–21 was a showcase of the best Africa can offer.

The men pulled off an exciting 13–12 upset over Egypt at Club One Stadium in Maadi with a last-minute defensive stand.

The riveting finish was witnessed in person by the Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Ashraf Sobhi.

On the other hand, the Nigerian women controlled Morocco by a scoreline of 26-12, with quarterback Anuoluwapo Bello scoring two second-half touchdowns that sealed the win.

It is now officially confirmed that both sides will compete in the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.

Tunisia took home the men’s bronze, while Egypt rebounded for the women’s third-place finish.

Eleven teams from eight countries competed, earning their first-ever official IFAF rankings and thus laying down the foundation for the sport’s future development.

The NFL joined IFAF in growing flag football all over Africa.

“Every player and official here has made history, but the real story is what comes next. With the NFL, we’ll build on this momentum.” – said IFAF President Pierre Trochet.

Meanwhile, the championship advanced visibility and opportunity for African athletes.

With flag football slated for its Olympic debut in Los Angeles 2028, Nigeria’s performance makes one thing clear: they’re ready for the world stage.
