  • FG has introduced a stricter immigration policy to tackle visa overstays.

  • Foreigners who overstay their visa by three months will face a five-year entry ban, while those who remain illegally for a year will be barred for 10 years.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a stricter immigration policy to tackle the issue of visa overstays in the country.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, stated that while Nigeria’s visa-on-arrival policy has not been scrapped, the government is prepared to take a firm stance on visa violations.

Tunji-Ojo has declared that foreigners who exceed their visa duration by three months will face a five-year entry ban, while those who remain in the country illegally for a year will be barred from re-entering Nigeria for 10 years.

“If you overstay your Nigerian visa for three months, we will ban you for five years. If you overstay for one year, we will ban you for ten years,” Tunji-Ojo said while speaking on Arise TV.

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has accused the National Assembly of dubiously placing their rules above the Nigerian Constitution and laws.

Ezekwesili made this statement in response to the lawmakers’ handling of the allegation of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
