Some of Nigeria’s most celebrated stars; Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Ayra Starr, and Omah Lay were all nominated but fell short on the night, which was held in Los Angeles, United States, and organised by the Recording Academy.
In the Best African Music Performance category, South African singer Tyla emerged winner with her hit song Push 2 Start, defeating Nigerian contenders including Burna Boy’s Love, With You by Davido featuring Omah Lay, and Gimme Dat by Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid.
“PUSH 2 START – Tyla (WINNER),” the Recording Academy announced during the ceremony
The win marked Tyla’s second Grammy victory in the category, having made history in 2024 with Water, the first-ever winner since the category was introduced.
Meanwhile, hopes were also dashed in the Best Global Music Album category, where Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia clinched the award with Caetano e Bethânia Ao Vivo, beating Burna Boy’s No Sign of Weakness among other global entries.
Although Nigeria dominated nominations, the night highlighted the growing competitiveness of global and African music on the Grammy stage.
