  • Numbeo ranks Nigeria last out of 89 countries with a score of 15.6, trailing Venezuela and Bangladesh.

  • Aggressive economic policies, rising insecurity, and recent attacks contribute to poor living conditions.

  • Luxembourg tops the Quality of Life Index with 218.2 points, followed by the Netherlands and Denmark.

Nigeria has been ranked the lowest country worldwide on the 2025 ‘Quality of Life Index’ by Numbeo, based on overall human well-being factors including safety, healthcare, cost of living, climate, and security. Out of 89 nations surveyed, Nigeria scored just 15.6 points, falling 58.1 points behind 88th-placed Venezuela, despite that country facing political instability and U.S. economic sanctions.

Other countries with low rankings include Bangladesh, with 77 points, Sri Lanka at 82.8, and Egypt at 83.2, placing them above Nigeria. Analysts attribute Nigeria’s dismal ranking to President Bola Tinubu’s aggressive economic policies since assuming office, which were intended to improve living standards but have reportedly worsened conditions for citizens.

Insecurity has surged under Tinubu’s administration, marked by violent attacks such as the televised assault on a church in Kwara State and the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi and Niger states within nine days last month.

On the other end of the spectrum, Luxembourg tops the global Quality of Life Index with 218.2 points, followed by the Netherlands with 216.5 and Denmark at 215.1.

The top 10 is completed by Oman, Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Austria, and Germany, highlighting stark contrasts in living conditions worldwide.
