In an interview, Tomori emphasized the need for eternal vigilance and sustainable measures to prevent the importation of Clade I Mpox. He highlighted the importance of investing in preparedness, rebuilding epidemiology divisions in states and regions, and educating the public on the importance of cooperation.

The professor also emphasized the need for proper education and awareness-raising among the public, particularly at the grassroots level, to ensure effective surveillance and containment of the disease. He criticized the focus on vaccine production and procurement, highlighting the need for investment in disease surveillance, awareness, and communication.

Tomori’s warnings come as the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention declared a Mpox emergency, and the World Health Organisation has also raised concerns about the spread of the disease.
