Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised alarm over the rising poverty and hardship in Nigeria, saying the country is “sitting on a keg of gunpowder.” He made the statement during a leadership lecture hosted by media personality Dele Momodu on Friday.

Obasanjo decried the deepening economic challenges faced by Nigerians, stressing that the country has no justification for such widespread poverty. “We can do it if China can lift 700 million people out of poverty. Nigeria should have no business with abject poverty,” he said.

He identified education, integrity, and disciplined leadership as key tools in reversing the trend.
“To get it right, we must ensure no child is uneducated. Leadership is the greatest ingredient for ending poverty,” Obasanjo said, warning that without urgent action, Africa will continue to be sidelined globally:
