Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, believes that Nigeria is on the path to major economic recovery, and she is confident the country will transform into a lender-nation within the next two years. She voiced this optimistic projection in Ile-Ife, Osun State, where she was honoured with the prestigious title of Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua during the Ooni of Ife’s 10th coronation anniversary.

The ceremony, rich in royalty and influence, drew some of the most notable figures in Nigerian politics and traditional leadership. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was present, alongside the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima. Former First Lady Patience Jonathan also attended, as did Governors Ademola Adeleke, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Dapo Abiodun. There was also a strong representation of lawmakers and former governors.

The First Lady expressed deep gratitude to the Ooni and to the people of Ile-Ife for the recognition, noting that her title signifies a new dawn of unity and progress. In her words:

“Nigeria’s season of joy has arrived. By 2026, we will not only be stable, we will be strong enough to lend to other nations.”

Traditional rulers graced the event in large numbers. They included the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Orangun of Ila, Oba Abdulwahab Oyedotun, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye. The atmosphere reflected deep cultural pride and mutual respect among royal institutions.

The Ooni of Ife praised Mrs Tinubu for her loyalty and longstanding support for the cultural institution of Ile-Ife. He described her as a woman who stands strong wherever leadership is required. The Sultan of Sokoto followed with royal prayers for peace, wisdom and prosperity for the nation.

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who also spoke at the ceremony, hailed the Ooni as a cultural reformer whose influence has helped to “project Yoruba heritage to the world.” He noted that his administration is committed to infrastructural development in Ile-Ife, including a major flyover that is near completion.

As celebrations ended, one thing remained clear, the First Lady’s remarks have sparked wide public interest. Whether Nigeria truly becomes a lender-nation by 2026 remains to be seen, but her confidence is unmistakable, and her message has set off fresh national debate about the future of the country’s economy.
