The Nigerian corporate and banking sector is mourning the passing of Chief Israel Ogbue, former Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, who died on Wednesday at the age of 99.
In a statement, UBA described Chief Ogbue as a revered boardroom statesman whose career spanned over six decades across both public and private sectors.

Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta State, his professional journey began in the Federal Civil Service before further studies in the United Kingdom led him to senior roles at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), where he retired in 1988.

Chief Ogbue joined the UBA Board in 2005 as a Non-Executive Director and was appointed Chairman in 2011, serving until 2013.
Under his leadership, the bank reinforced accountability and corporate governance practices that remain central to its operations today.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Chief Ogbue was a pillar of a prominent Nigerian family.
He was the father of Dr. Awele Elumelu and father-in-law to UBA Group Chairman Tony Elumelu.
The bank described him as a man of deep faith and humility, known for advising younger generations to balance ambition with moderation and remain steadfast amid challenges.
“We celebrate a remarkable life of service, wisdom, and impact, and we honour his invaluable contributions to UBA and to Nigeria’s corporate landscape,” the bank said.
Chief Ogbue is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
