President-elect, Bola Tinubu is set to storm Rivers State on a two-day visit.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that Tinubu will next unveil two projects constructed by the Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike during the visit.

The projects to be commissioned by Tinubu include the Rumuola-Rumuokwuta Flyover and Magistrates Court, in Port Harcourt.

This was made known on Wednesday by Governor Nyesom Wike during an inspection of the projects.

Wike said Tinubu would be a Special Guest to Rivers State in a two-day, May 3rd and 4th, official visit.

Chuks Ibegbu, a former National Publicity Secretary of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called for the postponement of President-elect, Bola Tinubu’s inauguration.

Ibegbu also called on the National Assembly to extend President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration by three months, beyond May 29, 2023.

In an interview with Daily Post on Wednesday, Ibegbu asked the National Assembly to invoke the provisions of the doctrine of necessity to extend the tenure of the incumbent administration.

He added that the inauguration of Tinubu was not sacrosanct at this time saying that all court cases regarding the recent elections be concluded before a new government be sworn in.

He said, “The National Assembly should make a resolution to extend Buhari’s tenure by three months as nothing is sacrosanct about May 29.

“We are expecting the President-elect 3rd and 4th of next month to commission the 12th flyover and the Magistrates Court building.

“We had invited presidential candidates of other parties like Labour, NNPP (New Nigeria Peoples Party). They all came and commissioned projects, and we did say to him (President-elect) that after the elections we are going to invite him to commission projects too.

“Rivers people will attest that we have given our best and we thank God and give Him the glory that it has turned out this way. We are extremely happy and we can beat our chests, go home satisfied that we have not disappointed our people.”

On activities to mark the inauguration of the incoming Rivers Government, Wike hinted several projects including the Intelligence Centre in Rumueprikom, remodeled Prof. Kesley Harrison and Dental and Maxillofacial hospitals among others have been lined up for the inauguration.

“Remember when the IGP (Inspector General of Police) came last time to commission the Intelligence Centre (Port Harcourt), we did promise him that we are going to build another Intelligence Centre. As I speak to you now, that centre is ready. Some other projects are the Kesley Harrison hospital”, he emphasized.

“In fact, May 29 is a minus in the history of Nigeria as it stands for past tragedies in Nigeria’s history. We should go back to October but the doctrine of necessity can be adopted in three months, and the heavens will not fall.

“Three months would allow all court cases on election matters as heavens will not fall,” that will be “distracting to such officers if they are sworn in and court cases against them persist.”

2023 census should be postponed

The former Ohanaeze Ndigbo spokesperson further called for the proposed 2023 census and allow for a new government to tow that path.

Ibegbu warned that carrying out the population census at this time could be too controversial, and too inimical to the nation.

Festus Keyamo

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN) has said President-elect Bola Tinubu will be inaugurated come May 29 except God stops it.

The Chief Spokesperson of the just-dissolved Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council made this statement on Tuesday.

He affirmed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not nursing any fear concerning the inauguration of Tinubu.

The Minister averred that opposition parties who think his principal will not be sworn in as President on May 29 for legal reasons were living in a fools’ paradise.

Keyamo hence advised opposition members to focus on their petitions at the courts or start preparing for the 2027 general elections.

His words

Why should be exercise any fear? Any opposition member alive now who believes that for some legal reasons Asiwaju will not be inaugurated must be living in fools’ paradise.

“Except there is an Act of God who is Almighty, nothing will stop the inauguration of Asiwaju. The opposition should just concentrate on their Petitions in court or start preparing for 2027.”

JAMB Reschedules 2023 UTME in 100 Centres

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has rescheduled the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in about 100 centers nationwide.

The scheduling the examination body said was to over “technical challenges” the Tuesday exercise faced.

Its Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin said this in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement read:

2023 UTME: JAMB RESCHEDULES CANDIDATES WHO COULD NOT SIT THEIR UTME ON THE FIRST DAY

“All candidates, who could not sit the UTME on Tuesday, 25th April, 2023, on account of technical challenges, have been rescheduled.

“This announcement was made in a statement made available after the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board( JAMB) management meeting at the close of today’s examination, which incidentally is the first day of the 2023 UTME.

“Following the announcement, candidates, who for technical reasons could not take the examination, are to print a new examination notification early tomorrow morning, Wednesday, 26th April, 2023, to know their new scheduled sessions.

“It is to be noted that about 100 centres out of the 708 centres participating in the 2023 UTME exercise across the country, experienced technical challenges that prevented their allotted candidates from successfully taking their examination.

“According to the statement, the Board reiterated its determination to deploy world-class assessment in line with global best practices to deliver quality assessment and regretted any inconveniences experienced by candidates and their parents. The statement further restated that the series of challenges encountered were on account of some novel features deployed by the Board to safeguard the sanctity of the examination by checkmating all incidences of examination misconduct being perpetrated and perpetuated by vested interests.

“The Board, therefore, reiterated the commitment of its technical team working round the clock to ensure that tomorrow’s exercise is devoid of any hitches.

“Meanwhile, the Board assures Nigerians that no candidate would be denied the right of taking his/her examination because, in case of any challenges experienced, such a candidate would be rescheduled to take the examination in the next available date and space.

FG Begins Evacuation of Stranded Nigerians, Students in Sudan

Dailyreport Nigeria reports that the Federal Government has announced the commencement of the evacuation of approximately 5,500 Nigerians, including students, who are currently stranded in Khartoum and other cities in Sudan.

To achieve this, the government has released N150m for the hiring of 40 buses to convey its citizens from Sudan to Cairo in Egypt.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, through the National Emergency Management Agency, made the payment of the N150m to an undisclosed transport company on Tuesday at 12:37 pm.

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that the payment for the evacuation of Nigerian nationals from Sudan has been made.

The evacuees were scheduled to take off on Wednesday morning. This move comes amidst the three-day ceasefire declared by the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Force.

Foreign countries have taken advantage of the temporary suspension of hostilities to move their nationals from Sudan. This was due to the deadly fighting between the two forces which has been ongoing for the past week.

The recent clashes in Sudan between General Abdel al-Burha and General Mohamed Dagalo have caused a significant power-sharing disagreement.

Unfortunately, the conflict has resulted in the loss of 500 lives, with thousands more injured and millions displaced.

In the past few weeks, the city of five million has been the site of intense conflict between army and paramilitary troops. Since April 15, the streets have been the scene of ferocious battles, resulting in significant damage to the city’s infrastructure. Charred tanks, gutted buildings, and looted shops have become a common sight across the city.

Woman Sentenced to 15-Years Imprisonment for Drug Trafficking

A 32-year-old woman identified as Oladitan Olufunmilayo, was on Tuesday sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos for drug trafficking.

Justice Daniel Osiagor handed down the jail term after the convict pleaded guilty to five counts of trafficking in banned drugs preferred against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

NDLEA prosecutor, Augustine Nwagu, told the court that the convict was arrested with the prohibited drugs on November 3, 2022, at Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc Export Shed at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, during the examination and clearing of cargo to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

According to him, the drugs that were found on the convict when she was arrested included, seven grams of Cocaine; 11 grams of Methamphetamine; 52 grams of Cannabis Sativa; 47 grams of Tramadol 225mg and 106 grams of Rohypnol.

The prosecutor said the offences committed contravened Sections 11(b) and 20(1)(a) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004; and are punishable under Section 20(2)(a) of the same Act.

Earlier when the convict was arraigned, she pleaded guilty and the prosecutor urged the court to convict and sentence her according to the sections of the laws she was charged with.

But her counsel, Dennis Warri, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing her, adding that his client is a first-time offender.

Justice Osiagor sentenced the convict to three years imprisonment in each, with an option of N350, 000, and one week on each of the counts.

The judge, however, ordered that the jail term should run concurrently.

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to unveil 81 national and regimental colours for newly established and operationalized units, as well as retired unit colours of the Nigerian Army.

This announcement was made by the Army’s Director of Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, during a briefing with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

The last trooping and presentation of Colours Parade for the army units was conducted in 2007.

Since then, new units have been established and operationalised in line with the increasing operational commitments of the army, as well as provisions of its extant Order of Battle (ORBAT).

Colours are usually retired after 10 years of service, and most of the colours in the Nigerian Army have been used in multiple operations in various geopolitical zones of the country as well as foreign countries, hence deserving retirement and the presentation of new ones.

He said:

“It is against this backdrop and in line with the traditions, customs and ethics of the Nigerian Army, trooping and presentation of colours parade 2023 will be conducted to retire torn or worn out colours.

“A total of 81 units will, therefore, be participating in the parade; 53 colours will be due for retirement, while 28 will be presented to new units.

“The event is a unique ceremony not only to the units eligible for colour presentation, as many are looking up to this ceremony to witness the height of military discipline and regimentation.

“No doubt the parade will win more admirers for the Nigerian Army as it will provide another opportunity to showcase its reputation for excellent and colourful parades.”

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria would be at the as the special guest of honour and reviewing officer.

Nwachukwu said:

The event will also have in attendance members of the National and Executive Council, members of the Diplomatic Corps and Governors of the States benefitting Units.

“Others are Service Chiefs, past Chief of Army Staff, senior military officers both serving and retired, captains of industries as well as other important dignitaries.”

Nwachukwu, an expert in military history, has emphasized the importance of national and regimental colours in the Armed Forces of Nigeria. These colours serve as a source of identity and pride for army units during parades and ceremonial activities. They create a feeling of pride in soldiers and ex-soldiers alike.

Throughout history, colours have inspired heroic acts of self-sacrifice and have become a symbol of the fighting spirit of regiments. They also represent the campaigns, battle honours, and badges granted to the regiment in commemoration of the gallant deeds performed by its members from the time it was raised.

The Commander added:

The association of the colours with heroic deeds of the units emblazoned on them has led to the custom of regarding the colours with veneration.”
