  • NCS logistical issues are causing many awaiting trial convicts to linger in custody beyond their regular stay.

  •  The lack of functional vehicles to transport detainees to court is a major challenge.

  • Some prisons rely on a single vehicle to convey hundreds of inmates to multiple courts.

The Nigerian Correctional Service is facing a logistical crisis, causing many awaiting trial convicts to stay longer than expected in custody.

According to stakeholders, the Service’s inability to provide effective transportation to convey detainees to court is a major challenge.

A source within the Ilesa Medium Security Custodial Centre, who preferred anonymity, lamented the situation, saying, “The present situation of Ilesa prison especially is disheartening. All the operational vehicles are grounded and beyond repair.”

The source revealed that the prison has only one vehicle to convey over 700 inmates to about 32 courts in Osun State.

“Many of the awaiting trial inmates are staying longer than expected because they could not go to court whenever their matters come up,” the source added.

Lola Wey, a human rights advocate, has called on the federal government to investigate the logistics of detention facilities and repair damaged vehicles.

A lawyer, who preferred anonymity, also lamented the challenge, saying, “Even in some cases, inmates have to contribute money to buy fuel for prison to take them to court. I want to plead with both Osun and the Federal Government to provide our prisons in the state with necessary facilities.”
