Nigerian weightlifters dominated Day 3 of the weightlifting event at the ongoing African Games 2023 in Accra, Ghana, clinching a remarkable nine gold medals across various categories.
At the University of Ghana, Legon, Adijat Olarinoye, Rafiatu Lawal, and Edidiong Umoafia showcased their strength and skill, securing gold in each category of snatch, clean and jerk, and total.
In the 55kg class, Adijat Olarinoye, the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medalist, displayed her prowess by lifting 80kg in snatch, 105kg in clean and jerk, and a total of 185kg, earning three gold medals.

Edidiong Umoafia, competing in the 67kg category of African Games 2023, proved her dominance with a clean sweep of gold medals, demonstrating her exceptional talent in weightlifting.
Rafiatu Lawal also shone in the 59kg class, securing gold in snatch (85kg), clean and jerk (105kg), and total (190kg), further solidifying Nigeria’s impressive performance in the weightlifting events.
With these achievements, Nigerian weightlifters have amassed a total of 14 medals in the ongoing 13th Africa Games weightlifting events. On Day 1, King Kalu and Favour Agboro set the tone by clinching five medals, with Kalu securing two bronze in the 55kg men’s class and Agboro earning two silver and a bronze in the 61kg class.
