A Nigerian woman, Favour Igiebor, is under investigation by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for tearing up her husband’s passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
According to the NIS, if found guilty, Igiebor may face a jail term or fine according to the Nigeria Immigration Service Act of 2015 (as amended).
The NIS spokesperson, Kenneth Udo, confirmed the investigation and described Igiebor’s action as a violation of Nigerian law.
A viral video showed her destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport, reportedly belonging to her husband, at the airport.

She explained her actions in another viral video, citing stress and family issues. However, her husband chose to remain silent, saying the issue could be resolved as a family.
According to Section 49 of the NIS 2015 Act (as amended), altering or assisting in altering a travel document can lead to imprisonment or a fine. However, there was no explicit section outlining sanctions for passport destruction.
Human rights lawyer, Collins Aigbogun revealed that while there was no specific punishment for destruction, Igiebor violated her husband’s constitutional right to freedom of movement.
Aigbogun stressed that destroying a passport infringes on the right to freedom of movement, putting it on hold.
