A Ghanaian court has sentenced a Nigerian woman, Beauty Alakwe, to 15 months’ imprisonment with hard labour for assaulting her nine-year-old daughter in the Ashanti Region.

In addition to the jail term, the court imposed a ₵6,000 fine, which Alakwe failed to pay, leading to her remand at the Central Prison, Kumasi, to serve the full sentence.
Police investigations revealed that the incident occurred on November 22, after a concerned resident, with support from the area’s Assembly Member, reported the abuse to authorities. The case was handled by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Kenyasi District under the Tafo-Pankrono Police Division.
The court further directed the Department of Social Welfare in Mamponteng, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, to ensure the welfare of the victim and her nine-year-old brother, and to facilitate their reunification with family members in Nigeria.
Commending members of the public for their cooperation, the Ashanti Regional Police Command reiterated its zero tolerance for child abuse and mob justice, stressing its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons across the region.
